Part of a conversation I heard today at the park

Mother: "No I didn't!"

Son: "Yes you did!" (Then screams across the park to his father) "Dad! Mom says she didn't farted but she did!"

Note to self: Do not lie to your children when they already know the truth- or prepare for public humiliation.

Guys In Cars Part 2

Before I say anything, let me prefece this post by saying that this morning, when I left the house, I looked like a school marm with my hair pulled back in a wet bun, no make up and pearl earrings. Plane Jane.

That said I was driving down the interstate on my way to work when a car pulled up next to me and a man lowered his window and was trying to get my attention. I looked over and thought he was trying to tell me something was wrong with my car.

Not quite.

He was simply trying to get me to notice him. Then he started making gogglie eyes at me and raising his eyebrows and gave me the biggest grin ever. This was no kid either. I've gotten that cocky Joey look "Hey how you do’in?" before. This wasn't it. The guy had to be in his mid-thirties. It was a genuine smile but in the silliest "Hey I have to get your attention!" sort of way. I started to laugh at him, I couldn't help it. Then he sped up and got in front of me and stuck his arm out the window and began waving his cell phone frantically in the air as he smiled back at me in his side mirror. I had to put my hand over my mouth because I was laughing so hard at him, but he didn't care. Then he put his cell phone down and stuck his hand out the window and starts to motion with his hand the numbers five-four-two-three and so on. He was trying to give me his phone number and then picked up his phone and shook it out the window again. He wanted me to call him! I was so embarrassed and yet laughing at the same time. Plus, since we were driving in steady morning traffic, there was no way to get away from him.

He was being utterly ridiculous and yet so funny. I called my roommate once I got far enough away from him and told her what happened. I told her how I couldn’t figure it out and how I didn’t look like anything special at all. “Maybe he has some librarian fantasy!” She said which made me laugh even harder.

Maybe?

Clueless Girl

I left the house this morning with my shirt on inside out. I didn't notice until I was in the car and happened to look down.

A few weeks ago I went to my bible study with two different flip flops on. That would be a first too. Again, I didn't notice it until much later.

I went for a run with my quasi-running buddy. Afterwards he told me that I had a booger in my nose. (I wonder how long that was there.) Sweeeeeeeeeeeeet.

When I pray that God would help me to walk in humility, He sure has a sense of humor about it.

P.S. It's been hours since I posted all the above and I just noticed now in the late afternoon that I put on my underware on inside out today too. Prefect.

Things Aren't Always As They Seem

This evening my dear friend was having a disagreement with her boyfriend in the car. She was kind enough to relay the details of their ridiculous fight. We laughed at how typical a girl she is and how typical a guy he is...
(Ahem, Dan Mega I hope this makes you LOL.)

Jane- "It's so hard for me when you just clam up and don't express yourself."

John- "Sorry."

Jane- I know you say you're sorry, but you don't act like you're sorry.

John- "Sorry! What do you want me to say? I'm sorry."

Jane- "But, if you really meant it, we wouldn't have been driving in silence for the last ten minutes!"

John-(continues to drive in mute silence while looking very pained.)

Jane-(In a pleading voice) "When you say you're sorry, I want you to mean it! I want you to put you're hand on my knee and look into my eyes and sincerely say "Babe, I'm really sorry."

John- "Okay. I get it. I'll do it next time."

Jane- "Ugh! I still feel like you don't understand me! I really want you to just understand me."

John- "Babe! I understand you, okay? It's just that, well, I really have to poop."

Little Ones

The other day one of my girls came up to me and very dramatically threw the back of her hand up to her forehead and cried "Teacher, I have a terrible toothache on my head!"

"Oh really?" I said. "Are you sure you don't have a headache on your head?"

"Oh yes." She said. "That too!"

***********************************

One of the father's of one of my students is about my age. His daughter is no idiot and knows that I am not married. However, she must not have been thinking her thought process through (her parents are married) when we had this conversation....

"Teacher, you wanna marry my Dad, don't you?"

"What? What makes you ask me that?"

"Because my Daddy's reeeeaaally handsome, so you wanna marry him."

(Me smiling and saying gently)"Honey, your Daddy's already married, so no, I don't want to marry your Daddy."

"Oh, well that's okay." (...And we resume painting)

The Answer!

Yesterday one of my friends was coming home from the airport, so another friend suggested that we Post-It note his entire car...and that's exactly what we did!

I highly recommend trying this. With twelve people. It only took us an hour.

Things That Drive Me Crazy

I love it when I'm in a public restroom and I'm precariously leaning over the potty in a crouched skiing position and my thighs start burning from holding the form after 15 seconds and I quickly go to grab the toilet paper, only to find the roll is so heavy that it comes off...one square at a time.

I love how my phone has an automatic button for the camera on the side. There is no way to lock the button, so next thing I know my phone has taken 50 pictures of the inside of my purse and used up all the camera memory. Then I have to manually delete each black picture by hand. I love that.

I love it when I go to use to the bathroom in a public restroom and the person before me really made it stinky. Then I come out and someone is waiting to use the same bathroom and they make a face at me because they think that I made the stinky.

I love it when I'm having a conversation with a group of people I don't know very well and one of the people has something hanging in their nose. And no one tells them. I especially love it when that person is me.

I love it when I am in a terrible rush and the person in the car in front of me is driving below the speed limit and they are inevitably going in the same direction as I am the whole way.

I love it how when I meet someone I am actually attracted to I clam up and don't say a word and totally ignore them. I fear they will sense my attraction. So in essence they probably think I hate them ...now there's a clever girl!

I love how Troll Men have no trouble chatting me up, (Think Mr. Collins in Pride and Prejudice) And the cute guys are too intimidated to talk to me. (Think Mr. Bingley)

I loved how the 4 year old I used to nanny for would accidentally dump her drink in my crotch when out to lunch and we would walk around the mall afterward and it looked like I wet my pants.

I loved it how everywhere I went with "my" four year old she always had to use the potty. Then once I sat her down on the toilet she would look into my face and say, "Now I don't have to go." (Yeah, that was classic.)

Oh how I love these things!

The Annoying Neighbor

This morning I woke up to my annoying neighbor. She is so loud. She bangs on my wall every morning and throughout the day. Sometime I bang on my wall and shout back at her to Shut up. I think she thinks it's a game. She bangs on her side, then I bang on mine. This time last year her kids were so loud too. They all live in the same room and I always knew when she was going to feed them because all of her kids would start crying at the same time. I find this really annoying at seven o' clock on a Saturday morning.

Last year it got so bad that I finally had them evicted. I know that may sound mean, but I couldn't take it. All her banging and their baby-crying was just too much.

Apparently though, she is moving back in. (That's why all the banging). It will only be a matter of time before I hear those annoying brats again.

Fortunately for me, I'm a lot bigger than she is and she doesn't scare me one bit. She's a Woodpecker and she has a thing for the wall next to my bed. But don't worry, when I had the exterminator called last year, he moved her nest and her babies to a safe place. Probably have to do the same thing this year. Honestly, one of these day I'm expecting her to peck her way through the wall and into my room. Silly Woodpecker.

Good Times

When I go home to NJ these are the things I most look forward to in December:

Seeing my family.
Playing with the dogs and taking the younger one running with me.
Having the dogs sleep on my bed.
Sharing my sister's clothes.
Dance Party USA in the back room with my sister.
Being in my parent's house.
Holding Fats the Rabbit.
Doing this when no one is looking.
Going shopping with my mom.
Seeing the whole family and my grandmother on December 24th.
Seeing the rest of the whole family on December 25th.
Hanging out in my brother's room.
Sitting at the dinner table with the five of us and watching my brother do a roast on my dad.

When I go home to NJ these are the things I do not look forward to:

Listening to my sister snore in my ear. My parents downsized and the two of us now have to share a bed in the guest room.
The taste of my parents coffee. Eeouuuu. I'm going to have to bring the good stuff with me.
Seeing that the dogs will have gotten fat.
Everybody inevitably fighting about hurrying up to get out the door on Christmas Eve.
Sitting at the dinner table with the five of us and after my father is roasted my brother and sister gang up on me. (actually, it's all really funny, making fun of stuff we did as kids.)

The Winter Coat

Can you figure out what's going on in this picture?

Well, I'll TELL you what's going on! This is Fats. She actually has a real name, but I never call her by her real name because she's FAT. She's eight pounds now, and larger than some cats. Oh, and she is wearing a collar and coat....and yes she IS a rabbit. This picture is not a joke. It was taken a couple years ago of her. My mother actually made her a coat, because you know, being a rabbit and all, she must not be warm enough in the cold. (Cough, cough, choke) Will someone please remind my mother that we happen to MAKE coats out of rabbits because their fur is so warm!

And what's up with the collar? Is she confused with the dogs? Maybe.

This is part of a real phone conversation I had with the dear woman this morning.

Mom: "I need your advice."
Me (as Kathleen Turner): "Sure what's up?"
Mom: "Well, It's 37 degrees out and the rabbit wants to run around."
Me: (I didn't know my mother can read rabbit's minds, but whatever.)"Yeah, and?"
Mom: "Well I was wondering if I should put the rabbit's coat on her."
Me: (long pause) "Wait, are you serious?"
Mom: "Yeah well, it's freezing outside!"
Me: (Laughing) "Mom, people make coats out of rabbits becasue their fur is so warm. I can't believe we're having this conversation! No I don't think you need to put the coat on the rabbit."
Mom: (laughing too) "Okay, maybe that does sound silly, but I just thought I'd ask to make sure."
Me: (shakes head, smiles) "Okay, Mom. Let's not have this conversation again, yeah?"

Please God. Please let me grow up and not be like my mother. Oh shoot, in some wonderful respects, I think I already am. But when it comes to stuff like this, I know who's the practical one...!

Kathleen Turner, My Alter-Ego?

I'm tired of being sick. I've been under the weather since last Thursday with an nasty head cold and sore throat. I just keep plowing through, getting more sleep and liquids. But! Wanna know the upside? I sound just like Kathleen Turner. Seriously! I'm currently sporting her raspy-sultry voice and I think it's quite comical. So I changed my voice mail. It goes like this. "Hello, You've reached Kathleen Turner. Yes, the famous Kathleen Turner. I'm taking all of Colleen's calls for the day, so please be sure to leave her a message. Thank you and good-bye."

The other night, my roommate was laughing at me because I was attempting my first home video. She says that I sure know how to amuse myself. I-sure-do.

The Worst Birthday Party Ever

(This post was encouraged by David McMahon and my Mom, who actually want me to write the good stories worth reading! So thanks. )

When my Aunt Maureen turned 40 my Uncle Cliff wanted to do something exciting for her. So he threw her a birthday party on a boat a few years back. I was excited. I was envisioning a Ralph Lauren Nautical magazine layout. Complete with shiny, blond skippers with rough stubble, wearing their cute blue and white stripped shirts and waiting to serve me some kind of yummy cold drink. Yeah, that's not what happened. He rented a large brown fishing boat instead. It was nice enough, I guess. But darn my snobby great expectations!

There was quite a large turn out of guests. Young cousins to great aunts and uncles all boarded the ship for what looked to be an enjoyable late summer afternoon along the New Jersey Shore line.

My father's side is quite a large Irish Catholic family and truth be told, when there is cause for celebration, we know how to celebrate. By the time our merry group took off most of the crowd had probably had about two beers to start.
We couldn't have been more then fifteen or twenty minutes out to sea when we realized that although it was a sunny day, the swells were terribly strong and our 35footer was rocking hard.

It seemed that the laughing and merrymaking sounds were quickly dying off and the sound of uncomfortable silence and strong lapping waves was the only thing to be heard around the boat. Nobody felt like talking and I noticed how large plates of food were left untouched everywhere.

I was sitting at the back end of the boat, trying to concentrate on the horizon and being thankful that I never had breakfast. I continued to inhale deep breaths of the salty air, trying to look casual with my arm dangling from the railing. My brother Ryan however was sitting in front of me stuffing his face with sausage, cheese and olives and downing it with beer. It was nauseating. He kept trying to have a conversation with me, but even the sight and smell of his food was disgusting so I told him to go away and leave me alone. He seemed only mildly disappointed, but disappeared and left me to my thoughts and my rolling stomach. The only conversation at this point by anyone was about who was feeling more sick and who was going to throw up first.

My Uncle Tom was one of the few who seemed completely unaffected by the rocking boat and kept going around eating to his hearts content and asking “Did you throw up yet?” Honestly, my Uncle Tom was hilarious and his ability to make light of the situation was very entertaining.

Finally I decided to get up and go into the galley and get something to drink. I walked downstairs and as I surveyed the room I found three very miserable looking people. My grandmother, my Aunt Florence and my grandfather were sitting forlornly on a bench. No one was talking and they all looked green. Off to the side were the food and drinks that had previously been set up very meticulously, buffet style. At this point though the food was now sliding off the table and cups were rolling all over the floor. For some reason you could feel the swaying of the boat more intensely from the inside and it was harder to stand.

“Hi everyone!” I said. Trying to muster the most cheerful voice I could. “Umph.” Was all my Grandfather could reply. My poor aunt was holding on to the railing behind her and trying very hard to look like she wasn’t going to throw up. “Hi Colleen.” My Grandmother managed. Trying to sound as equally polite. It was obvious no one felt like talking. I grabbed a bottle of water, faked a smile and backed up slowly. Then I turned, wobbled up the stairs and plopped back down at the back of the boat.

I sat there for awhile. Praying with earnest that God would help me keep my wits about me. I also happened to think I looked pretty cute in a kickin' yellow halter top, khaki pants and flip flops. Throwing up on myself or over the edge would definitely wreck the look.
Awhile later, my brother Ryan came back to find me. This time he wasn’t eating. He sat down across from me and let out a low disgusting lunch-beer burp. “You are so gross and I can smell that.” I said. “Sorry, but I don’t feel so good now.” He said.
Our conversation was interrupted when my Uncle Cliff announced that the captain was going to bring the boat up one of the tributaries and get us off the open sea.

It didn’t take long to get us turned around and within 10 minutes we began to find our stomachs settled as we made our way up one of the little inlets.
Up until this point, it was as if everything had been happening in slow motion. Like when you press pause on the DVD player and then hit slow and watch the way people’s movements look exaggerated and their words come out long, slow and deep. Then within a matter of minutes it was as if someone hit the play button and we began talking like normal. People started coming back to life and regained their party spirit and appetites.
My Uncle Tom spent the rest of the time as the party’s main attraction. He got the scoop on everyone and had us laughing as he recapped the poor relatives who couldn't’t manage to keep their stomachs down. He had a way of teasing my Aunt Susan, Aunt Florence and Cousin Danny in such a way that instead of embarrassing them, made them feel like the main attraction. As if throw up in public is fun and enjoyable to watch.

(Mental note for my 40Th and to any family and friends who plan on being there…no parties on boats, please. Thanks.)

Spanish Tourettes

Along the same lines as "stupid sister conversations" (see below post)

My sister and I are extremely close. We both have a quirky sense of humor. When seperated, we're amusing. When together, it's like Colleen x2 and we are our own little show. I think all siblings have an interesting way of relating to each other and each family is different. My sister and I relate best to each other through humor.
Years back when we would call each other we would leave phone messages by quoting movie lines and then just hang up. But recently I started doing soemthing else. I started saying silly words in Spanish just to see what she would do. "Hello?" She would say. "Sacapuntas." I would say. (It means pencil sharpener)"You're an idiot." She would say, but she would be cracking up at the same time. She started calling it "Spanish Touretts" because even though it wasn't swearing, it was very random. It seems I will do just about anything for a laugh. Even if the laugh is on me.

Stupid Sister Conversations

Me: "Hey Lauren, do you ever feel like you just have to say random words sometimes?"

Lauren: "What are you talking about?"

Me: "I don't know, I mean, do you ever feel like words come to mind in your head with regard to nothing and you just have to say them?"

Lauren: "You're weird, like what?"

Me: "Oh I don't know, like hamburger or Shakespeare or Guggenheim."

Lauren: "Oh sure, I just got one for you."

Me: "Really, what?"

Lauren: "Shut Up."

Cheesy Dad Comments

Cheesy Dad--------"Hey Colleen, did you know I have the most famous initials in the world?"

Sarcastic Daughter -"Yeah right Dad, no you don't."

Cheesy Dad- -------"Yes I do! You see my initials all over the world! Arthur Thomas Maloney, ATM."

Sarcastic Daughter-(Sheesh!)
