Garbage Can Head

My thoughts sit like a bowl of soup.
I stare at the bowl.
Soupy brown with drippy okra.
I write my thoughts down.
Thoughts of nothingness.
So I toss them in the garbage can of my head.
It feels like Jambalaya in my soul.
That's all I have to say about that today.

(This makes no sense. I should have drawn a bowl of soup, but that would be boring and a garbage can head is much more enjoyable.)

Night Light

Tonight I am like the color of fire.
And the moon looks like it is burning a hole in the night sky.
The clouds look like smoke.
And no one can turn off the Night Light.

Night Sleep

It is an incandescent light
that shines betwixt the blinds
of early morning's summer sun.
It is her body that draws and rouses her out of slumber.
It is finished. Her body has finished sleeping.
An act that is performed every night.
It is the slumber of night sleep.
Tis an interesting moment,
to hover between sleeping and waking.
And dreams scatter to the corners of the mind
like little whispers that almost seemed real.
It is here where she rests. In those brief moments,
the rest is peaceful and sweet and she is no different
than a child.

The other side of me

The days go by bleeding into one another like a deluge of mud and silt.
It is washing away my youth.
The summer is sagging in it's heat.
My life is flashing before my eyes and I cannot hold on to it.
It seems there is nothing I can capture. I can't even show you my memories.
Help me.
Help me, because I think today, in this moment I feel lost.
These feelings, they come and go and ebb and flow.
And the Psalmist speaks to me "Why are you so downcast oh my soul?"
"Put your trust in God!"
I have no compass.
So I am blind.
Then light the way is what I pray, so that I may see..Your Face.

Parable of the Flowers

Trying so hard to grow together,
yet facing different directions .
They never saw the same perspective.
But having grown together;
their roots forever entwined.
Pulling one out,
would kill the other.
Left alone, they are still
a fragrant beauty and a mystery
to behold.

Flowers have I known...
only a bud have I been.
Yet flower am I alone.
Still fragrant. Good!

Smile

Even if you think
you're ugly
(which you're not)
you're smile can change that.
I've never met an ugly smile.

I am Me

This actually used to be the greeting on my answering machine...

Hello.
I am me.
I am the only me that there is.
Don't try to be me.
If you try to be me,
who's going to be you?
Not me.
So you just be you
and I'll be me and
people won't get us
confused, okay?

like a little child

A child is most at rest
not when they are sleeping,
but when they are playing.
The quietness of a child
is not when they are being quiet,
but when they are laughing.
The peacefulness of a little boy
is not when he is at church,
but when he is out exploring nature.
The sweetness of a little girl
is not in the dresses she wears,
but in the Innocent Beauty she
portrays when she wears them.
Children don't struggle to be
who they are, or believe
what is true.
If Jesus said we are to
accept and welcome the
Kingdom of Heaven like a
little child and this is how
children live...
It can't be that hard.
